Before you travel abroad: an 8-step checklist

Passport, insurance, data, transfers and the unexpected — the 8 things to check before you close your suitcase, all in one place.

The most stressful part of a trip is often the last few days before you leave. Go through this list once and you will avoid most unpleasant surprises at the airport and at your destination.

1. Passport and visa

Many countries require your passport to be valid for at least 6 months after your return date. Check whether you need a visa or an e-visa a few weeks before the trip.

2. Compare tickets

The same flight can cost different amounts with different sellers. Also check whether baggage is included in the fare.

3. Travel insurance

Seeing a doctor or going to hospital abroad can be very expensive. Some countries require insurance, for example for a Schengen visa. Online insurance takes a few minutes, and the policy arrives by email.

4. Mobile data: eSIM

Buy an eSIM plan instead of paying for roaming: you know the price in advance and your phone gets online as soon as you land. Check that your phone supports eSIM.

5. From the airport to the hotel

If you arrive at night or travel with family, booking a transfer in advance is convenient. Compare prices in our transfer search.

6. Car rental

If you plan to leave the city, book a car in advance: prices rise in high season. Some countries also require an International Driving Permit.

7. Tours and attraction tickets

Tickets for popular museums and tours sell out fast. A ticket bought online often lets you skip the queue at the ticket office too.

8. If your flight is delayed

Keep your boarding pass and any notice of the delay. In many countries a long delay or cancellation entitles you to up to €600 in compensation.
